WHAT IS THIS STUFF?
This patented "Sambucol" is the stuff that everybody tries to imitate. There is a reason for this - it has been proven to work against viruses like the flu. This "Nature's Way" product combines the excellent Nature's Way quality control with this proven, patented formula. The result is an excellent product that is not just for children and that has been documented to be effective against the flu.
ABOUT THE "SUGAR-FREE" VARIETY of "SAMBUCOL":
This particular variety of Sambucol is SUGAR-FREE. To me, this means that one can avoid the immune-diminishing properties of added sugar when taking this variety, whether or not one is a diabetic.
ALTERNATIVES TO SAMBUCOL:
Other products I have tried do combine elderberry extract with zinc, echinacea and Vitamin C, but they don't work nearly as well. The closest to this true Sambucol product comes from "NOW" who makes a "Zinc Lozenge" that has all of these elements plus slippery elm, bee propolis, and 2.5 grams of sugar per lozenge. Obviously, the 2.5 grams of sugar added per lozenge doesn't help one's immunity -- it's meant to enhance the taste. Of course, some people use combinations of different herbal products with good effect, but Sambucol comes right out of the bottle and is ready to use.
THE BRAND AND THE VENDOR:
Simply stated, "Nature's Way" is a terrific brand and Swanson is an excellent discount vendor who provides good service and fast delivery. I have purchased this and other products from this mfg./vendor combination with complete satisfaction for several years.
THE BOTTOM LINE: LARGER SIZES MAY BE MORE ECONOMICAL
In this patented Sambucol product, there really is something special involved in the manner that the elderberry is processed and extracted because nothing else has equalled the results against the flu virus that Sambucol has. If the flu has infected your household, this is definitely worth trying as there is no known way to get rid of the flu that works as well or as consistently.

i bought both the original nature's way sambucus syrup and the sugar free version. they are both equally very sweet tasting, but sugarfree has that typical slight aftertaste. my 6 and 3 yr olds both love the original syrup and beg to have more than the tsp dose. i also think that it did shorten the duration of our cold/viral symptoms by a couple of days. the sugar free version uses sorbitol for sweetening and sorbitol does have unpleasant side effects. i would not buy it again because of the sorbitol. if they could switch to stevia instead of sorbitol, i would try it again.

Even after reading the good reviews on this product, I wasn't convinced it would work but since it's basically berry juice I figured it couldn't hurt. Well, I was able to prove that it definitely shortens the length and lessens the severity of a cold. I started on my first bottle a few weeks ago but ran out shortly after Thanksgiving because I hadn't set up the subscribe and save option and didn't get another bottle ordered soon enough. I started on the second bottle a little over a week ago. Unfortunately on Thursday, 12/8, I knew I had a cold so I started taking 2 tsps. 4 times per day every day and by Sunday my cold symptoms were basically gone. That's roughly a 3 or 4 day cold...which is unheard of for me as my colds usually last at least a week or more and make me miserable. I had a runny nose for a couple of days but never got to the "so stuffed up you can't breathe" stage. I'm hoping that once I've been taking this regularly I won't get any more colds, but if I do, I'll know that taking the extra doses will keep them short and manageble.

This is the third time that I have purchased this product. I believe that it helps me to keep from getting sick when everyone in the office is suffering and my four year old brings home so many germs from pre k. I have noticed that even if I do get sik it lasts maybe 24 hours and is never too bad.
